To foster and support an Iyengar yoga community of teachers and practitioners across the Triangle (Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill and surrounding areas) based on the teaching and philosophy of B.K.S. Iyengar.
The word “yoga” means “union” in Sanskrit, representing the union of the Individual Self with the Universal Self, as well as the union of the body, mind, emotions, and intellect. The path of yoga enhances the quality of one’s life, provides mental and physical health, and enables one to face both the challenges and blessings in life with equanimity.
Iyengar yoga emphasizes proper alignment in poses while developing strength, balance and flexibility. Classes incorporate the use of props (blocks, blankets, bolsters, chairs, belts, etc.) to help with correct alignment and create a safe environment that is suitable for people of all ages, sizes, flexibility, and body types. Iyengar Yoga is named after B.K.S. Iyengar (1918-2014), who was a world-renowned yoga teacher and author; some of his works include Light on Yoga, Light on Pranayama and Light on Life. He devoted his life to the study and evolution of yoga, based on the eight limbs of yoga taught by the sage Patanjali in the Yoga Sutras.
There are several Certified Iyengar Yoga teachers in the Triangle area. Please see our Teachers page for their biographies, locations and teaching schedules.
