Meet Anne!

Locations: Cary, Chapel Hill, Durham

Anne discovered Iyengar yoga while in graduate school at the University of Michigan in 1994. Living with scoliosis and wearing a back brace as a youth had convinced her that she was destined to live a life with back pain; however, Iyengar yoga changed her mind! Anne quickly learned that every pose focuses on lengthening and strengthening the spine and how to work with her scoliosis. She found that when she practiced consistently, she was pain-free. She also loves the benefits of a regular inversion practice, and will tell you, “While headstand got me through grad school, shoulderstand gets me through life!” Headstand helps with focus and concentration, while shoulderstand fosters patience and emotional balance. In addition, Anne has lived with Crohn’s disease since 1999 which has influenced her practice and mind-body awareness.  Her teaching style is compassionate and challenging while maintaining a sense of humor and ensuring yoga is for everyone regardless of age or physical condition.

Over the years, Anne has studied with Laurie Blakeney, John Schumacher, Dean Lerner, Elise Miller, Patricial Walden, Bobbi Goldin, and Rosa Santana and has attended many Regional Iyengar Yoga workshops and Iyengar National Conventions (2007 with Geeta Iyengar, 2013 with Birjoo Mehta, 2023 with Abhijata Iyengar). She regularly takes classes with Abhijata Iyengar, Rosa Santana and Graham Williams. Anne has a Ph.D. in Environmental Health Sciences and has been teaching yoga intermittently since 2003 while juggling a career as a scientist at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)  and raising three girls. Since retiring from the EPA, Anne is focusing on teaching Iyengar yoga and growing the Iyengar yoga community in the Triangle.

Anne teaches at the UNC Farm in Chapel Hill, the Briar Chapel Community Association and the NW Cary YMCA.
